MUMBAI: As a part of pre-monsoon works, the BMC garden department has pruned 12,467 trees so far. The remaining 1,11, 670 trees will be pruned by June 7.
Meanwhile, BMC has issued notices to 1,855 people including housing institutes, government organisations, private premises, asking them to prune trees within their premises. As per BMC, the pre-monsoon works are carried out to ensure that there is no inconvenience to the citizens during monsoon.Accordingly, proper and scientific pruning of large trees, especially those that can become dangerous during strong winds, is being carried out by the garden department.
There are approximately 29.75 lakh trees in BMC area. Of these 15,51,132 trees are in the premises of private institutions, 10, 67, 641 in government buildings and 1,85,964 on roadside.
