Mumbai: Earlier the city crime branch team had busted a drug manufacturing factory in Sangli and recovered 122 kg of mephedrone or MD worth Rs 245 crore have now recovered Rs 3.46 crore and arrested a hawala operator from Kalbadevi for being part of the nexus.
The unit 7 of the crime branch on Saturday arrested Jayesh Motabhai alias Maali (30) after was discovered that the latter allegedly aided and abetted in the crime.“He is an important lead in the case as he had knowledge that the money he was routing was of proceeds of the crime (sale of drugs) and yet he worked as an important medium of money exchange and this is not the first time’’ said a senior official of the crime branch.
However, a hawala operator said that police were unnecessarily targeting them. “If agencies start arresting innocent angadia operators just because he had sent the crime money and was allegedly aware that it was crime money, then several angadia operators will be under the scanner. How can you say that he was aware of the crime?’’ he added. With this the number of arrests in the case touched to 12.
