CUET UG 2024 pattern change: Reduced exam time, new courses and other details – Times of India | IIT EXPERT



Application for the Common University Entrance Test for Undergraduate courses (CUET UG) 2024 are underway. Eligible candidates will be able to register for the national-level entrance test till March 26, 2024. Subsequently the National Testing Agency (NTA) will be conducting the exams in the month of May 2024.
The National Testing Agency has released a document answering various common queries regarding the CUET UG 2024 exam.The NTA had earlier announced of multiple changes to the university entrance test.
However, candidates were speculative about the new changes in the exam pattern. In order to provide clarity, the exam conducting body has released the FAQs document on its website, nta.ac.in. Here are the main takeaways-
Two more courses added in the domain-subject list
The NTA recently added two more courses to the CUET UG curriculum, bringing the total number of domain-specific subjects to 29. Students will be able to choose only six subjects out of 63, which include 33 languages, 29 domain-specific tests, and one general test. The testing agency advises students to choose at least one language. The two new subjects are Fashion Studies and Tourism.
Changes in the duration of exam
The Undergraduate entrance exam will last 45 minutes. Accountancy, economics, physics, computer science, informatics practices, chemistry, mathematics/applied mathematics, and general test will all have a 60-minute duration.
What are the different sections in the exam?
This year’s exam will be held in hybrid mode to encourage more students to take the national-level entrance exam. For subjects taught on paper, there may be three shifts per day, each lasting about two hours. Here are the section-specific topics-

  • General test: This section will assess candidates’ general knowledge, current events, general mental ability, numerical ability, quantitative reasoning, simple application of basic mathematical concepts (arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration, statistics), and logical and analytical reasoning.
  • Language: This section will be tested on reading comprehension using various types of passages (factual, literary, and narrative), literary aptitude, and vocabulary.
  • Domain-specific subjects: Questions primarily from the Class 12 syllabus will be asked.

The NTA has also clarified on the exam pattern for different domain-papers on its FAQs document:

Teaching Aptitude Test Overview The Teaching Aptitude test consists of a total of 50 questions, with candidates required to answer 40 questions.
Computer Science and Informatics Practices The computer science and informatics practices exam is divided into two sections. Section A includes 15 questions about computer science and informatics practices. Section B1 contains 35 questions from computer science, while Section B2 contains only questions about informatics practices. Candidates are expected to answer 25 questions in each sub-section.
Mathematics and Applied Mathematics The Mathematics and Applied Mathematics tests are divided into two sections. Part 1 is compulsory and consists of 15 questions. Section B1 contains 35 questions from mathematics, while Section B2 contains 35 questions from applied mathematics. Candidates are required to answer 25 of the 35 questions in each section.
