Mumbai Cricket Association Appoints Omkar Salvi as Head Coach for 2023-24 Season | Mumbai News – Times of India | IIT EXPERT

Mumbai: In May last year, when the Mumbai Cricket Association appointed Omkar Salvi as their head coach for the 2023-24 domestic season, not many were convinced about the decision. The brother of former India pacer Avishkar Salvi, who is the head coach of Punjab, never played for Mumbai and in terms of First-Class experience, had turned for Railways in just one match in 2005.He had a fruitful stint as Mumbai’s bowling coach, though, and worked under Chandrakant Pandit when Mumbai won their last Ranji title in the 2015-16 season. In fact, so popular was Salvi that a few years back, when Mumbai’s players were asked who they preferred as their head coach, they gave Salvi’s name. While he wasn’t considered for the job then, the man bagged the post after adding more weight to his CV as the assistant bowling coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders. “When he learnt that he had been appointed as the Mumbai head coach, Salvi burst into tears,” a person close to the Mumbai team told TOI. When Mumbai lost in the quarterfinals of both the white-ball tournaments earlier this season, the knives were out for Salvi. However, to the city’s die-hard cricket lovers, it is performance in the Ranji Trophy that matters, and that is where Salvi has almost scored a ‘Perfect 10’. “It shows that you don’t need high-profile or you don’t need flashy coaches to be around the team. I mean, you can still be under the radar and get the best out of each and every player, and Omkar has done that really well. He has that experience. He was with the Mumbai team before, but in a different role, and is now as a head coach. I thought the journey started from May end or June last year,” Rahane said.
